Unity Games and Quarantine

Unity Games and Quarantine

This is a weird week. I was supposed to be on vacation with a good friend in California this past weekend and this week but, then the Corona Virus happened and so I still have the time off but, I don’t have a real plan for how to spend all this time off. I’ve been trying to explore new technologies while I’m off. I dipped into a website called gamedev.net looking for a project to get into and I actually did have some offers. But, one of the people suggested I learn Unity. So I did a bunch of Unity tutorials yesterday and did a fun tutorial based on a driving game. My demo game turned out pretty doofus but, I learned a lot and it was fun. Maybe I will do another tutorial…maybe not. I have not decided on today’s project yet. Stephen will be leaving for the doctor soon because they won’t let him come back to work without Corona Virus testing.

I went crazy with the free assets I can’t even upload the game for sharing its too fat. Its literally just one track.

I downloaded so many free assets into this file it was too large to upload it. I don’t know how to better compress the file yet so…I’m uploading screen shots of it. I really do want to do a project today but its literally been 2 hours since I began this post. My husband will not be going to the doctor today they are going to give him a virtual appointment. I guess the doctor is working from home. Hopefully he can get okayed to go back to work. I do sneak out to pick up my groceries from Walmart during the 2 hours. I put on a huge pot of soup to cook. I was able to get enough ingredients to put a descent soup pot together. You could only add two of anything to the Walmart shopping cart. It had built in rationing and hoarding control. I don’t know whether to be impressed or depressed.

It looks like Unity is providing 3 months of free premium course access because of COVID-19 Support. Well that’s fortunate for me. I love quarantine. I am sad that I didn’t get my vacation but, this is awesome and the free classes everyone is offering are awesome. I wish I could make money while is happening. That is the only draw back. So while I was doing this “Karting” tutorial, I started importing a ton of fantasy assets. I couldn’t figure out how to replace the Kart without killing its functionality. Maybe that is something I should figure out. There needs to be a Karting part 2. Maybe I’ll just make the first person shooter or something. I’d like to make a game but not a traditional hack and slash game though. I’m so done with those. I really am into other genres. I love survival games and games that have massive crafting and gardening systems. I really like Minecraft but, i wish it had more of a story line running through it. I wish I could make a game like that.

See that ball tree? I was putting textures from one pack onto prefabs from another pack. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it did not work.

Another game I wish could be reworked is Afterlife. I’d love to play this game now. Can you imagine if this game was redone with an achievement system? Probably not a ton of people know about this game because its pretty old but, I loved it. It is a city builder game where you create a heaven and hell and control the balance of punishment and reward structures in the afterlife. You also manage the religion, beliefs and development of man on earth or actually its the Embos (I think the life forms are called). It was a great game but, it did have a lot of flaws and it was overly hard and you can pretty much never win. But, the soundtrack was excellent and the angel and demon that guided you were awesome. I wish I could make a game like this someday. I’m so inspired. Oh, btw, they gave my husband a 14 day quarantine to be sure he’s safe. Now he’s home with me for my vacation. Wow! PS – I’m totally formatting this post with Gutenberg for more practice.
